This week, I start rehearsals on Evening of Christmas, a one woman show I created at Grand Dame Theatre, in aid of bringing the magic of theatre to those in care homes and hospices in the north, unable to attend the theatre due to their circumstances.
The plot revolves around a young lady, Mabel who is about to set off on a shopping trip when she meets the residents [Audience]and she whisks them away with her on a trip around London. It's a fully immersive sensory show with audience participation.
I think the most exciting thing about this tour is that it's going to be bringing so much cheer and excitement in these homes, also the way I am to play this character will bring a lot of memories up.
I have thought of everything on this show, from the materials used in the dress to what is in Mabel's basket. I have deliberately put things in that people can pick up and inspect and there will be some sensory aspect to that object. Soft plush teddy, French Lavender and Rose soaps [Traditional perfumes] fur scarves and silk cravats. All to create the illusion of a Christmas gift shop and give residents different textures and scents to evoke memories and senses.
The show is topped off with Mabel singing the songs of Christmas from traditional carols to holiday favoruites like White Christmas!
